Prohibited & Restricted Materials

SiteCycle is a marketplace for usable surplus construction material — not a hazardous-waste disposal channel, and not a way to bypass code-compliance review. This page describes exactly how that is enforced, not just as a policy statement but as rules our system actually applies to every listing.

This page describes product behavior accurately as of this build, but is not a substitute for professional legal or safety review before a real launch. See Marketplace Rules for related policy.

Never allowed, regardless of category

Any listing whose title, description, or details match one of these is blocked automatically at submission — the seller sees why and cannot publish it.

Asbestos-containing material

Prohibited

Materials that may contain asbestos cannot be listed on SiteCycle. Contact a licensed abatement contractor for disposal.

Lead-based / hazardous paint or chemicals

Prohibited

Open chemicals, solvents, and hazardous substances cannot be listed on SiteCycle.

Fire alarm / life-safety control equipment

Prohibited

Fire alarm, sprinkler, and other life-safety control equipment cannot be resold on SiteCycle at this time — these systems require certified installation and inspection.

Used electrical panels / breakers / wiring

Prohibited

Used/removed electrical distribution equipment cannot be listed. Unopened, sealed surplus electrical components may qualify under Electrical — subject to admin review.

Damaged structural product

Prohibited

Structural products with visible damage, or structural anchoring hardware, cannot be listed.

Restricted — requires admin review first

These materials carry real code-compliance or safety weight (fire-rated assemblies, refrigerant-charged equipment). They can be listed, but stay off the public marketplace until an admin reviews the listing — often alongside a certification or label photo.

Fire-rated assembly component

Restricted

Fire-rated products require a photo of the certification label and admin review before this listing goes live — buyers are still responsible for confirming code compliance for their project.

Refrigerant-containing HVAC equipment

Restricted

Refrigerant-charged equipment requires admin review before listing.

Category risk tiers

Every category on SiteCycle carries a baseline risk tier. A listing is also always screened against the keyword rules above no matter which category it's filed under, so a fire-rated door listed under "Other" is still caught.

What this does not mean

  • Passing these checks is not a certification. SiteCycle does not verify structural, electrical, fire-safety, or other code compliance merely by allowing a listing to go live — the buyer is responsible for confirming suitability for their intended use and applicable project/code requirements.
  • Sellers still warrant they have authority to sell or transfer listed material — see Seller Guidelines.
  • Anyone can report a suspicious or apparently-prohibited listing from its listing page; our team reviews reports and can remove listings or suspend accounts.
